April Spotlight – Lisa McAndrews

We’re excited to introduce a new outdoor activity led by Lisa McAndrews, a talented landscape designer and long-time nature enthusiast.
Lisa taught Landscape Design at Cabrillo College for 36 years and continues to inspire others through her deep knowledge of native plants, plant identification, and sustainable gardening.
After moving to Soquel in 1987, Lisa turned her own garden—a true “blank slate”—into a living classroom, experimenting with fruit trees, shrubs, and native species to create a thriving habitat for birds and pollinators. Now retired, Lisa joined the MCSC Senior Center and continues to share her love of plants, birdwatching, and beautifully designed landscapes with others.
Join Lisa on the second Friday of each month for a guided Plant Walk near the Senior Center grounds and Soquel Creek. Enjoy the fresh air, discover local flora and fauna, and take home a helpful handout full of ideas for your own garden – especially those that attract birds, butterflies, and native bees. Join us for Plant Walks at 10:30 am on Friday, April 17 and May 8 to see so many plants in bloom. For more information of future Plant Walk dates, please contact the MCSC office or check the monthly event calendars.
March Spotlight – Cathy Robinson

Originally from Manhattan, New York City, Cathy made her way to California in 2013, settling first in San Francisco. During her seven years there, she immersed herself in the world of theater arts — singing in choirs, acting in plays, performing improv, and exploring her talent for writing.
In 2020, Cathy moved to Capitola and soon found a new community at the Mid-County Senior Center, where she became an enthusiastic member of the Choraliers. She’s an active participant in both the singing and tap dance groups and warmly invites everyone to attend the Choraliers events that are always full of music, laughter, and friendship!
Cathy also played a key role in bringing the Improv Class to the Center’s list of activities. She encourages anyone looking for fun, laughter, and social connection to give Improv (short for improvisation) a try. This form of unscripted performance sparks quick thinking, creativity, and teamwork — and best of all, no previous experience is needed! All you need is a willingness to relax, laugh, and enjoy the moment.
At the heart of Cathy’s joy is her dedication to Buddhist philosophy and her love of connecting with people. She also tutors English Language Arts to young learners from around the world, which continually gives her fresh insight into our diverse and ever-changing world.
